Apple is going to hand out a special iPhone to ethical hackers and security researchers, it writes company. Dutch researchers are also eligible for this. They can use this phone to discover vulnerabilities in the device.
The device is intended for “controlled use” in conducting security research, Apple writes. The phones are made available to researchers, but remain in Apple’s possession. The phones are replaced with a new one every twelve months.
Security researchers can sign up with Apple to receive such a device. For this they have to meet a number of requirements. For example, they must be members of the Apple Developer Program and have a “proven track record” of discovering vulnerabilities in Apple products.
Apple writes that it is not mandatory to report bugs found on the phone to the company, but encourages it. When reporting a vulnerability in the device, researchers can receive a reward received this can amount to 1 million euros.
