In other words, the blooming zone has so far spread from the southwest to the northeast with a daily average of 26 kilometers. The long-term average is 40 kilometers per day – so we are currently experiencing a rather leisurely spring. When our new map was calculated, the Rostock message had not yet arrived – hence no green in the Rostock area.

In Berlin, on the other hand, only the first delicate green leaf tips on a balcony apple tree. In Igersheim / Tauberfranken: First green leaves on the tree, but very small, tightly closed flower buds. In a nutshell: apple blossom along the Rhine!

… balcony apple tree in Cologne has opened its flowers. Ornamental apple blossom in Rheinberg on the Lower Rhine. Flower photo from Arzdorf near Bonn unfortunately shows no apple blossom – but it could slowly be there.

April 3: Has the flower already reached Heilbronn?

We have not yet received any reports from the central Neckar region – but the apple blossom model calculation stiffly and firmly claims that the first apple blossoms should already be there. We look forward to seeing the next 48 hours. Report here!

March 28: A warm day – but only one

Temperatures up to 20 degrees in the southwest. But tomorrow snow in medium locations. Rather not enough to trigger the first wave of apple blossoms.

March 25: Waiting for the flower tsunami

The cold nights slowed the flower development a little. So far, isolated trees are blooming in the Breisgau. And apple trees in pots, which are sheltered on the balcony or terrace, show isolated flowers. In a few days, however, the apple blossom should begin on large contiguous areas. Keep your eyes open and report the start of flowering here!

March 20: Today we received the first photo of an opened apple blossom.

This means that spring 2020 is the earliest in the list of apple blossom early years documented by the SWR since 2006 with regard to the very first flowering. Now it is important to determine when we can no longer only speak of individual flowering trees, but of the flowering of the trees on large, coherent areas. In order to be able to determine this time of extensive flowering, we need attentive flower observers who send us many reports. Let’s go!

Along the Rhine, many apple trees will soon look like the one that was photographed in Denzlingen im Breisgau. Typical for an apple tree: First it unfolds two leaflets, which then look like two mouse ears.

Southern Upper Rhine Valley: Slightly wavy “mouse ears” on an apple tree in Denzlingen im Breisgau. 9th March.

SWR

This is what the pommologists call this stage of flower development on the apple tree: the mouse ear stage. From this point on, depending on the weather, it will take two to three weeks before the first pink flowers open.

By the way, before the apple blossom begins, it’s the pears. The pear tree does not show mouse ears. But you can still compare animals: His first leaves are grouped like the tentacles of an octopus around the still small, unopened flower buds. The photo that was sent to us from St. Ottilien shows this very nicely.
