Apologize Khalid Basalamah After Lecture ‘Puppet Haram’ Becomes a Problem

Jakarta

Sorry Master Khalid Basalamah unraveled after the lecture about ‘haram puppets’ became a problem. Ustaz Basalamah actually did not ignore the problems that arose because of his lecture. However, this did not dampen the anger of some.

Basalamah’s lecture, which was said to have ‘forbidden’ wayang, initially circulated on YouTube until it went viral, then it was widely reported. Basalamah then uploaded a video to clarify and apologize on Tuesday (14/2/2022).

In her clarification video, Basalamah mentioned that the lecture, which was said to have forbidden wayang, was delivered last year at one of the mosques in the South Jakarta area. Basalamah also mentioned that the video of his lecture in question circulated in bits and pieces.

“We made this video for clarification as well as apologies for the snippet of a question asked by one of the congregation a few years ago at the Blok M Mosque in Jakarta, and at the same time our answer to the problem of wayang,” said Basalamah in a video uploaded on her official YouTube channel, Khalid Basalamah Official, as seen on Tuesday (15/2/2022).

Basalamah also sounded very careful in giving clarification. He localized it first by explaining that his explanation of wayang was the answer to the congregation’s question.

“First is, the scope is our recitation and the answer of a Muslim preacher to a Muslim questioner. That used to be the limit,” he said.

Basalamah admitted that he only gave advice when asked by the congregation about wayang. Basalamah also admitted that he did not say that wayang was haram.

“When I was asked about wayang, I said how good it would be and we suggested that we make Islam a tradition, don’t make tradition into Islam, and nothing in my words forbids it,” he said.

Basalamah also briefly explained about the statement ‘don’t become a tradition as Islam’. Basalamah means, when a tradition is in line with Islam there is no problem. But if otherwise, he suggested leaving the said tradition.

“The meaning of these words is also if there is a tradition that is in line with Islam there is no problem, and if there is a conflict with Islam, it is better to leave it. This is a suggestion,” he explained.

Basalamah also explained a video clip of his lecture when he was asked about the conversion of a dalang. Read on the next page.
