Anxiously Joe Biden Supporters Await Results

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Residents and supporters Joe Biden in the presidential candidate’s hometown in Wilmington, anxiously awaiting the results US Presidential Election 2020 which has not been completed since election day on November 3.

They have become more frequent checking mobile phones and news sites, hoping their choice will mimic the state that is now the winner. But they can’t just ignore the tired feeling of waiting.

“It’s tiring. I’ve probably only slept two hours since Tuesday [3/11], “said Zanthia Oliver, a 55-year-old Biden supporter and recently elected to a second term on the Wilmington City Council.

On Thursday (5/11) morning Indonesian time, Joe Biden was getting closer to the victory threshold of 270 electoral votes. Some count Biden pocketed 264, others 253, while Trump has 213.

However, this narrow margin of victory has been hampered by Donald Trump’s camp calling for a call for a halt to vote counting in a number of states and followed by several demonstrations by supporters at the local KPU.

Amid the tension and frustration waiting for victory that loomed, Oliver tried to distract himself so that he wouldn’t fall further into stress.

“I’m just running a few errands, I’m just trying to stay busy,” he said.

Oliver admitted that he received calls from his colleagues or friends all night regarding the developments in the election results.

“At 2 a.m., I drink tea which makes me sleepy. Three mornings I eat bananas, I wash my clothes. It must be adrenaline because I can’t sleep,” said Oliver.

Meanwhile, other Biden supporters in the city where the presidential candidate has lived for three decades, opt for a more philosophical approach to dealing with the tense waiting.

“There’s nothing to do but hope for only the best,” said 58-year-old Deon Backus. He admitted that he was waiting for Biden’s victory by turning on and off the television to monitor news developments.

“I only saw 15 minutes on this channel, 20 minutes on the other. I’m not stressed because of that. My wife, she’s the one who made this scene, not me,” he added.

Jason Williams, 38, also keeps track of the news through an application on his cell phone. “Every few minutes, I always check it,” he said.

“I’m a little worried. I want to know who will be the president. I think everyone is feeling crazy about this,” Williams said.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, at the Chase Center Riverfront which is the headquarters of the Biden campaign, hundreds of journalists from various media around the world are just as tired of waiting for the results.

Between broadcasts and news writing deadlines, a number of journalists spent relaxing time at a nearby hotel discussing Biden’s chances of becoming the 46th president of the United States.

Meanwhile, if Williams thought they would be able to get an answer by Friday (6/11), the rest of the Wilmington area was prepared to wait a little longer.

“I hope Joe really wins,” Backus said.

“But I think maybe there will be results in one and a half to two weeks. And then we still have to go back and forth in court,” he continued, referring to Trump’s pursuit of lawsuits.
