Anne Hathaway Proud of Her Five Years of Sobriety

Anne Hathaway, known for her role in “The Devil Wears Prada,” recently opened up about her significant achievement of being sober for over five years in a heartfelt interview with the New York Times. Hathaway, 41, considers this a significant milestone in her life.

She revealed that drinking had been a coping mechanism for her insecurities about her body, sharing, “It feels a little too exposed to discuss the alienation I felt from my body, but there was a lot of somatic stress there.” The actress admitted that she had been caught up in her thoughts a lot and had used alcohol to cope with the anxiety.

Reflections on Turning 40

With her recent turn of turning 40, Hathaway now believes that there are other milestones in life that are more significant than just one’s age. She mentioned, “The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things ‘middle age’ simply because I can be a semantic stickler, and I could get hit by a car later today. We don’t know if this is middle age. We don’t know anything.”

She emphasized that she doesn’t take her age too seriously and reflected on her mindset and personal growth. She feels that every age has its own unique lessons and experiences to offer.

The Sobriety Journey and Turning Point

Hathaway decided to embark on her path to sobriety back in 2018. As a mother to her two sons, Jonathan (8) and Jack (4), she recognized that she needed to make a change in her life. The tipping point came when she experienced a terrible hangover while taking her eldest son to school. She knew she needed to make a change, and since then, she has remained committed to her sobriety.

In a recent interview, she shared her journey of self-discovery and sobriety. She acknowledged that everything in her life has improved since she committed to sobriety and emphasizes that she no longer finds solace in wallowing. She stated, “For me, it was wallowing fuel. And I don’t like to wallow.”

A New Lease on Life

Choosing to become sober has given Hathaway a fresh perspective and a renewed appreciation for life. She shared that quitting alcohol has made her realize how much she was holding herself back. The actress, now proud of her achievements, noted her commitment to personal growth and finding joy in life’s milestones, Maya Angelou’s quote “I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now,” in her journey of sobriety. Hathaway’s bravery has inspired many and serves as a testament that overcoming challenges brings about personal growth and a renewed outlook on life.
