Anders Tegnell – – Norway is unfortunate

In a new interview with the Swedish newspaper Today’s News (DN), state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell is optimistic about the corona situation in Sweden – and explains what he thinks is the reason why the infection curve is not is as steep as in Norway.

Despite the fact that the infection trend is strongly increasing in large parts of Europe, including in Norway and Denmark, it is lower in Sweden.

Tegnell believes that the low spread of infection may be due to the fact that omicron was confirmed late in Sweden. He pulls out the Christmas table at the nightclub Louise Restaurant & Bar in Oslo on November 26 – where 105 is confirmed omicron-infected – as an example of horror.

– If you are unlucky, as in Norway, and get omikron in a place where it gives a lot of infection, then of course it goes faster, says Tegnell to Dagens Nyheter.

In Sweden, only 51 cases of omicron have been confirmed. In Norway, 1498 cases of the variant have been detected so far, according to FHI. Most cases have been detected in Oslo and Viken.

– Here in Sweden, we have had individual cases and not seen any incidents that have caused extensive spread of infection, says Tegnell.

He hopes that Sweden will avoid a similar spread of infection as in Norway and Denmark.

– The fact that the spread of infection started later in Sweden gives us the advantage that the elderly population has managed to get the third dose. It makes a difference when it comes to the burden on the health care system, he says.
