Andalusia registered 684 organ transplants in 2020 and 87% of families said “yes” to donate, a similar figure to other years

SEVILLE, 24 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Andalusia registered 684 organ transplants in 2020. Of these, 417 were kidney transplants, 171 liver, 49 lung, 32 heart and 15 pancreas. The Ministry of Health and Families wants to thank, taking advantage of the celebration of the National Transplant Day that is celebrated this Wednesday, the collaboration of the associations of transplanted patients and the solidarity of the families who have said “yes” to the donation, around 87 % in 2020.

This figure, similar to that of previous years despite the pandemic year, was notable in Huelva and Malaga, with 93% and 91% acceptance respectively. At the initiative of the Spanish National Transplant Organization (ONT), the National Transplant Day is celebrated every March 24, with the aim of making the population aware of the benefits and great human value of donating organs.

According to Health in a press release, these figures show an increase in activity in vital transplant modalities, such as heart and lung transplantation, which is “very commendable considering that the lung transplant team has had to reconcile In addition, the autonomous community has maintained a year-on-year organ donation rate of 37.9 donors per million population, above the national average that is at 37.4.

Salud y Familias wants to take advantage of this day to remember that, thanks to the measures put in place and the great collective effort in a difficult situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, in 2020 a total of 321 organ donors were registered in Andalusia, of which 205 were also tissue donors, to which must be added 90 exclusively tissue donors.

Regarding asystole donation, the activity was important with 92 donors, representing 29% of organ donors. Likewise, the Ministry wants to highlight the effort of Andalusian health professionals, who “in addition to their dedication to the care of patients affected by Covid-19, have worked tirelessly to obtain the donation and transplant data registered for the year last”.

Regarding the global decrease in transplantation activity compared to previous years, Health points out that it was due, especially, to the decrease in kidney transplantation activity, although the transplant activity of patients with greater difficulties in finding a donor was maintained ideal, such as hyperimmunized kidney patients or pediatric patients.

He points out that an important effort was also made to continue with the crossover kidney transplant program, a program with special logistical requirements that has been maintained despite the difficult situation experienced by the health system due to the pandemic. In addition, for the first time, in 2020 all children on the waiting list were successfully transplanted.

Finally, it indicates that as a consequence of all the measures implemented by the Andalusian public health system, the waiting list for organ transplantation has been “little influenced” by the adverse epidemiological situation, “it has even been reduced by more of 4%, going from 508 patients (as of December 31, 2019) to 490 patients (as of December 31, 2020) globally for all organs “.

In addition, in the case of lung transplantation, the number of patients on the waiting list “has fallen by about 26%, from 65 to 48”, concludes the Ministry.
