In case of Hector Alejandro Cabrera Fuentes –A scientist from the El Espinal community, in Oaxaca– is not a story from a Netflix series, although it may seem so, because it is about a doctor who was arrested on February 16, 2020 in Florida and is accused by U.S to spy for the government of Russia.
The journalist Laura Sánchez Law, who has followed up on the case and published it in Millennium, said that Cabrera Fuentes is a scientist from Oaxaca who is accused of being a spy by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who was ordered to carry out a mission in the United States to capture the license plates of a vehicle of apparently an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, for its acronym in English), a situation that was identified by the United States authorities and led to the arrest of the Mexican.
“When we learned that in the United States a Mexican scientist accused of being a spy for President Vladimir Putin had been arrested, the story seemed like the history of the Cold War. The doctor had traveled to the United States to take his children to Disneyland when asked to do a mission by the Russian government. Supposedly the doctor would have two women: one in Oaxaca and another family in Russia, therefore the Russian government was holding his wife and daughters in that country, so to let them leave or remove this detention it was necessary for him to take the license plates of a vehicle in a private one of an agent, it is not revealed what type of agent but it seems to be one of the FBI ”, he said by telephone to Miguel Angel Vargas of Pacific Station.com in Super 98.9 FM.
Sánchez Ley pointed out that in his journalistic work he was able to learn the perspective of Héctor Cabrera’s relatives and acquaintances, who state that the detention is a scientific persecution of the Oaxacan scientist, since his latest works are related to genomic medicine and treatment diseases, a situation that they consider the United States did not like and is the reason for their arrest.
“We don’t know what will happen, just that you were reading his head right now, I remember the original head that I had given him was ‘the trial is resumed in the United States while in Mexico they still continue to believe that it is a scientific persecution’, we gave the task of talking to people in El Espinal, where students, the mayor himself, friends, cousins, family, assure that everything is about a scientific persecution for the last issues in which Dr. Héctor Alejandro Cabrera was involved, which was medicine genomics (…) There is the theory that the doctor had discovered something and the United States did not like it and that is why he is imprisoned ”, he said.
The journalist said that there is no certainty of what will happen to the Mexican scientist, who, according to said national media, will have to define whether or not he accepts his responsibility in the case, since his trial will be resumed on January 15, 2021.
“The only thing that is really against in the files is that supposedly he entered a private one and photographed the plates of an official vehicle of a United States agent, that’s what we have, the agent detects and reports it, And at the Florida airport, to travel to Mexico City with his Mexican family, they check his wife’s cell phone and realize that he had removed the license plates of an official vehicle belonging to an agent in recent folders, that’s what I know. has against him, “he said.
Laura Sánchez explained that family members, friends and people from the El Espina community consider that it is not logical that a scientist like Héctor Alejandro Cabrera would have been so naive as to allow himself to be trapped by just taking a photograph, since in any case it would have been better learned vehicle license plates. He pointed out that the element that the United States has against Cabrera is said photo, as well as an alleged confession that the US authorities presume from the Mexican himself.
“Supposedly the file that we read in a federal court in the United States was the same Alejandro Cabrera who confessed the story at the airport, so that is what the United States government says, that he confessed this part, which was reconstructed between what reported the agent of a private in Florida and what Cabrera confessed, but it remains to be seen what happens on January 15, if he sustains this confession and to see what type of sentence he could be receiving, “he said.
The Milenio journalist explained that Cabrera Fuentes worked as a specialist in cardiovascular diseases in Singapore, although he was traveling to Mexico because he supported an organization dedicated to promoting stays of Mexican scientists in other countries.
“He worked in a cardiology hospital and specialized in cardiovascular diseases there in Singapore, however, in Mexico he had an association for which he came, which is called ‘More scientists for Oaxaca’, where they supported the mayor Hazael Toledo. and his cousin Rusbelt Fuentes, this NGO that is basically dedicated to promoting scientific research ”, he explained.
