Amstelveen willing to name street after Peter R. de Vries

“Peter R. de Vries has lived in Amstelveen for a long time: we knew him and he grew up here,” alderman Herbert Raat (VVD) told the local newspaper. AmstelveenZ. “I don’t have to explain that he was a special resident.” He added that the municipality is “of course” open to naming a street after De Vries if that request comes.

At the moment, a new neighborhood is being built in Amstelveen where famous residents are honored with a street name, that would be a logical place. It was previously announced that the Amstelveen agent Gabrielle Cevat, who died in 2008, will be given a street name, as will Sobibor survivor Jules Schelvis and artist Toon de Haas.

Call in Amsterdam

In Amsterdam, a call has already been made to rename Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, where the crime reporter was shot on July 6, to Peter R. de Vriesstraat. Brother Wouter de Vries and lawyer and friend Peter Schouten told Humberto on Friday that they fully support the initiative, which arose on Twitter. Like the rest of the family:

A group that calls itself ‘the citizens of the Netherlands’ had started an online petition on Friday. Schouten told Humberto that he has already pointed out the initiative to Mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam. “I think it’s good if we remember how someone like that fought for all of us.”

The chance that it will come to that soon does not seem very high. The rules for street names dictate that a street cannot be named after a person shortly after his death.
