AMOLED vs IPS Screens: Understanding the Key Differences

Jakarta

AMOLED and IPS screens are often a consideration when someone wants to buy a smartphone. These two screens are the most commonly used screen types on various smartphones.

The two screens have different characteristics. There are several advantages and disadvantages of these two types of screens. Here detikINET presents the differences between the two types of screens:

AMOLED Screen Character

AMOLED is an abbreviation for Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, which means this screen comes from improvements to OLED technology.

This screen is different from an IPS screen because the AMOLED screen uses active matrix technology which can arrange each pixel one by one. This type of screen uses a Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) to control each pixel.

This results in each pixel turning on or off independently depending on the user’s control. AMOLED is a type of screen that has richer colors than IPS screens.

This is similar to the characteristics of OLED displays. However, this type of screen consumes less battery than OLED screens because when displaying darker content, some pixels can turn off automatically.

IPS Screen Character

IPS is a type of LCD screen with In-Panel Switching technology which uses liquid crystal technology to display images.

This type of screen has the advantage of being more clearly visible in direct sunlight. This is because the screen’s light transmission depends on the back light which illuminates the entire screen display.

Some of the advantages of this screen are that the production price is cheaper than AMOLED screens. Apart from that, the lifespan of this screen is claimed to be longer than AMOLED screens.
