Amersfoort Animal Park wants memorial site for killed chimpanzees | NOW

Amersfoort Zoo wants to set up a memorial site for the two escaped chimpanzees that were shot two weeks ago, reports a zoo employee Facebook.

Initially, there will be a temporary place where visitors and employees can commemorate the animals. Ultimately, there must be a definitive memorial site “where everyone can reflect on these iconic animals of our park and the event to give them a place”, according to zookeeper Willem Verdonck.

Two male chimpanzees Mike and Karibuna were shot after escaping from their enclosure. The two monkeys exhibited “impressive behavior”, according to the zoo. No one at the zoo was injured.

The death of the monkeys caused much commotion. Last week, a condolence register was opened and signed by hundreds of people. Several animal rights organizations find the shooting of the animals cruel and unacceptable, and demand an independent investigation.
