American Journalist’s Tesla Car Crashed in the USA and Reappeared in Ukraine with Drake Playing on Spotify

American journalist of the CNBC news channel Jay Yarow is experiencing the bizarre situation first hand. “I had a Tesla, I crashed it, it was a total shame. And now it’s… in Ukraine? And there’s someone listening to Drake on my Spotify account,” he confided on the X social network.

American journalist Jay Yarow crashed his electric Tesla Model X in the USA a few months ago. He thought it was totally destroyed, but now he is no longer surprised.

His former electric car started reporting to him again via the app on his phone. The shock is all the greater because the car is sending a signal from Ukraine. It turns out that someone is even listening to the songs through the journalist’s Spotify account, which is still paired with the car.

According to CNBC Jay Yarow tracked down “his” Tesla (or at least its computer) via a mobile app near the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, about 125 kilometers from war-torn Kherson.

At the same time, he wrote off the car a long time ago, because at the end of last year, after the wreck, the insurance company told him that it was a total loss, that is, damage that is either irreparable or simply not worth repairing.

As he points out DailyMail portal, Yarrow is not the first or the last American owner of a totally wrecked car to remotely track down his former car in Ukraine. Other Teslas that were written off in the USA or Canada are now sending a signal from Belarus, for example.

Several similar cases can be found on social networks. For example, one of the former owners of Model Y already last year on the reddit network stated that he destroyed his electric car in Toronto and tracked it down more than 7,000 kilometers away a year later, in Minsk, Belarus.

How is it possible? Totally dismantled cars are put back on the market through scrap yards, which then offer them through auction sites. Hacked Teslas are sold on portals for, for example, 10 to 30 thousand dollars, i.e. roughly 220 to 600 thousand crowns.

Crashed cars then make it across the ocean. Buyers use them for parts, but others take the trouble and try to repair the car for profit. This route is very popular in Eastern European countries such as Ukraine or Belarus. “Totally wrecked vehicles can never legally drive on US roads again, but some countries are not so strict,” notes CNBC.

The American automaker advised the former owner, Yarow, to disconnect the electric car from his account in the Tesla app, just as if he had sold it. According to experts, such a move should prevent new owners from using other connected apps such as Spotify.

However, the user data still remains in the vehicle’s electronics and, according to experts, this is a security risk. “Internet service credentials remain in the vehicle’s electronics and then can be used by anyone who gets hold of the electronics,” automotive security expert Ken Tindell confirmed to CNBC.

And it also applies to other personal data – route records on maps, contacts or calendar data uploaded to the car from the phone.

“Always erase your data from the car and try not to share more information with the car than absolutely necessary,” advises another cybersecurity expert, Warren Ahner. According to him, people should not allow the phone to pair things like location or contacts with the car.
