Amazon Prime Day vs Black Friday: When to Make Your Bargains

Is it best to make it this week during Amazon Prime Day, or is it worth waiting until the Black Friday deals at the end of November?

Amazon Prime Day kicked off this morning, a bargain festival by e-commerce giant Amazon. Today and tomorrow Amazon will offer many great deals on all possible product categories, including electronics. You will also be able to find bargains on the Dutch version Amazon.nl.

You can safely call Amazon Prime Day the unofficial opener of the sales season this year. Because the deals will follow each other at a rapid pace. After all, Black Friday is almost upon us at the end of November, the peak of the bargain season that now takes a whole week for most retailers. And then comes the end of the year period, where retailers sometimes dare to lower prices. To unpack again with discounts in January.

Nice for consumers, because in the coming months you will have plenty of opportunities to do good business. But on the other hand, you can no longer see the really good deals because of all the discounts. When is the best time to take action? Is Amazon Prime Day the ideal time to strike, or should you wait until Black Friday arrives? We weigh the two bargain festivals against each other.

Prime Day

Amazon started Prime Day in the year 2013. Initially the event was intended to sharply discount its own products, but retailers soon also started to share in the bargain joy. Prime Day grew into a major event fairly quickly. Since last year, the event has lasted two days instead of one day, and new countries are added every year.

It is important to know that you must have an Amazon Prime account before Prime Day to take advantage of the bargains. Fortunately, a Prime account is not that expensive at all, the cheapest formula costs 2.99 euros per month, and you also have access to Prime Video, for example. You can also try it for free for a month. So if necessary, just take it before Prime Day.

Black Friday

The Black Friday tradition has been around for a long time. Unlike Prime Day, it did not originate in online retail either. What they do have in common is that they are both a phenomenon that has blown over from the United States and is also becoming increasingly popular in our regions. Black Friday traditionally takes place on the last Friday of November, the day after the American Thanksgiving. Legend has it that retailers sell so much that day that they can finally register ‘black figures’ in their accounts from that day. Hence the name.

Black Friday is considered the biggest bargain festival in the United States, and the event is also growing in Belgium. Nowadays almost all (online) retailers jump on the cart, and some even start to unpack with discount promotions up to more than a week in advance. Especially for the purchase of electronics, Black Friday has always been the right time to take action as a consumer. Can Prime Day change that?

Buy now or wait?

Leaving Prime Day to October can certainly put some pressure on retailers to start discounting ahead of schedule. Still, retail experts don’t see things going so fast. They suspect that the large chains will rather wait until Black Friday before unpacking the spectacular discounts. Amazon Prime Day seems especially interesting this year if you want to buy a product from Amazon itself, such as the Echo Buds, or if you like to buy from Amazon.

That doesn’t mean you won’t find interesting deals today and tomorrow. If you have already made your wish list for the holidays, it certainly doesn’t hurt to check amazon.nl. Who knows, you might already find the first packages for under the Christmas tree.
