Although It’s Not Yet a Week of Fasting, Brawls in Jakarta Have Already Led to Fatalities

It’s not even a week yet Ramadan But brawl in the capital has claimed lives. Polda Metro Jaya revealed that in the first week of Ramadan there have been eight acts of brawls that took place in Jakarta which resulted in one death.

Summarized detikcom, Sunday (26/3/2023), Kabid Humas Polda Metro Jaya Kombes Trunoyudo explained that the rampant clashes occurred because there was an opportunity to gather. He said the frequent gatherings, especially while waiting for sahur, raised the potential for brawls to occur.

“Because it started with potential, ngabuburit or waiting to break the fast, waiting for dawn, when walking around there is the potential to meet and conflict resulting in brawls,” Trunoyudo told reporters, Sunday (26/3/2023).

The following are the findings of cases of brawls that have occurred in the Capital City in the last few days:

March 22 One Case

On the first night of entering Ramadan, last Wednesday (22/3), a brawl occurred in the Benda area, Tangerang City at around 23.00 WIB. A total of 9 teenagers were arrested after being involved in a sarong brawl.

March 23 Three Cases

The day after, on Thursday (23/3), a brawl broke out in the Jatipulo area, Palmerah, West Jakarta. During the brawl, a man with the initials MJ (29) was reportedly killed after being hit by a sharp weapon.

On the same day, brawls also occurred in Ciledug, Tangerang City. A total of 9 teenagers were arrested when they wanted to fight. The youths carried sharp weapons, from swords to sickles.

It didn’t stop there, a brawl also occurred in the Tanjung Priok area, North Jakarta, on Thursday (23/3) early morning. At that time, the officers arrested three students carrying sickle-type sharp weapons when they were going to fight.

March 24 Three Cases

Continuing to the second day of Ramadan, action brawl occurred in the Jagakarsa area, South Jakarta. As many as 15 teenagers were arrested by the police when they were about to fight. They use a sheath tied at the end to attack their opponent.

It didn’t stop there, brawls also occurred in the Cipondoh area, Tangerang City, on Thursday (24/3). As many as 6 teenagers who were going to carry out a sarong war with other groups were arrested.

Still on the same day, brawls broke out again in the Makassar area, East Jakarta. The teenagers who were involved in attacking each other used firecrackers to sharp weapons of the sickle type.

March 25 One Case

On Saturday (25/3), a brawl between teenagers occurred in the Jatiuwung area, Tangerang City. In this case, 17 teenagers were arrested when they were about to fight.

Anticipate Polda Metro Jaya

Trunoyudo said that in this brawl case the police maximized their pre-emptive and preventive programs. The program starts from the police, RW to precision patrols.

During this Ramadan, a total of 2,000 personnel have been dispatched to carry out patrols. Later, the police will comb all jurisdictions of Polda Metro Jaya to anticipate brawls. In addition, patrols are carried out to anticipate the occurrence of other crimes during Ramadan.

“Performance of the special Polri service from Polda Metro Jaya, around 2,000 personnel, both from Polda Polsek, all of them participated in carrying out the patrol,” said Trunoyudo.

“We want Jakarta to be a home together and comfortable and safe in carrying out worship in the month of Ramadan,” he added.
