The 28-year-old from Upper Austria delivered a strong journey, especially in the upper part, but lost a little time in the middle part. The accident then happened after the edge of the local mountain. Kriechmayr plunged to the traverse in the left curve and landed roughly in the safety net. The ÖSV driver, who was ninth in the first training session, was able to free himself from the predicament, then drive to the finish line on his own and then give the all-clear.
“I feel the right hand a little, but otherwise it fits. Not so tragic. I crouched again after the jump, which was actually completely stupid. Then I got pressure in the compression and didn’t have the outer ski nicely under me. I tried to brake, but the net was five meters too close, otherwise I could have done it. It sure looked very cool for the fans. It touches me that I made such a stupid mistake, ”said Kriechmayr in an ORF interview.
Best time by Johan Clarey

Clarey dreams of victory
Clarey set the fastest time in 1: 55.69 minutes. The 39-year-old veteran, who was third on the podium in 2017, prevailed 0.55 seconds ahead of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. In contrast to the Norwegian, who drove to the finish standing up, Clarey pulled through. “Normally I’m not so good upstairs, but I caught him today. Hopefully I didn’t drive too well too early and can repeat that in the race. Of course, I dream of winning, but there are some that are difficult to beat, ”said Clarey.

Beat Feuz is one of them. The Swiss once again did not fully reveal his cards in training and was 1.41 seconds behind Clarey. “I tried something in line technology. On Wednesday I didn’t catch the U-Hakerl and the steep slope exit at all. I was certainly a lot better on the line today, but not yet perfect, ”said the 32-year-old, who is still chasing his first victory in Kitzbühel.
Mayer has already tried the battle line
Mayer won the Super-G on the Streif at least once in 2017, but of course would like to add a victory in the downhill. In training, the Carinthian went to the limit and drove the battle line. “At least I tried it. I didn’t do everything as I wanted it to, but overall it was fine. Clarey is technically very mature and really very good. Apparently it’s good for him down here. I wanted to drive the steep slope similar to him, but had to hold the ski too long, ”said the 29-year-old.
Training trip by Matthias Mayer
Matthias Mayer has already positioned himself with a third place in the second training session for the race on Saturday.

The second best Austrian was Daniel Danklmaier. The 26-year-old Styrian, who sensationally finished fifth last year, came 13th, 1.26 seconds back. Danklmaier lost no more time from the steep slope exit to the finish. “I was too late upstairs, you just can’t do that. You have to catch it and be a wild pig. The slope is sensational from top to bottom, ”said Danklmaier. Otmar Striedinger came 15th. Christian Walder was 20th (+1.80), Max Franz 26th (+2.19).
