Almost invisible cameras between the shelves of the Jumbo: ‘Weird story’

Big brother is watching you, isn’t it? In the Jumbo in Oirschot, small cameras have been placed in the aisle of the crisps and the wines as a test. According to Jumbo to check whether the chips are still in stock. Privacy experts frown.

There are two small cameras hanging almost invisibly on the shelves with red and white wine. A sign states that the cameras are not used to film or photograph the customers. Its sole purpose is to see if the shelves with chips opposite are not getting too empty. “So that these can be refilled faster for our customers,” said a spokesperson. “The test in the Jumbo store in Oirschot will be ready in two weeks, after which we will assess the results.”

The experiment raises questions among privacy experts such as Brenno de Winter. “This is a very strange story. Don’t you have the staff to check for empty shelves? I don’t see the necessity that way. CCTV surveillance must be necessary. This means that the entrepreneur cannot achieve the goal in any other way. Is there no other option that is less intrusive for privacy? ”

Privacy expert Mitchell Hendriks of Lumen Group also questions the trial. “I have never seen cameras that check the stock on shelves before,” he says. “For example, filming people in the hallway where wine and alcoholic drinks are lying could lead to certain conclusions about the person in question. The law therefore sets conditions for the use of cameras. ”

According to expert Hendriks, the question is whether cameras are necessary in this case. “There is a stock system and stocks are usually counted, which could show ‘how full’ the shelf actually is. And in addition, there are also continuous employees walking through the store who can identify this. Both options are less drastic for the privacy of those involved. ”

The spokesperson for Jumbo says it is another test and that they do not know whether they will roll it out further.
