Some bathers who were at Praia da Terra Estreita saw, in the early afternoon, a shark heading for Praia do Barril, in Tavira.
As a precaution, according to a source from the Captaincy of Tavira, a red flag was raised on the beaches between the island of Tavira and a barrel, just in case. The lifeguard coordinating the Terra Estreita beach went looking for the water scooter but did not see it.
Without a new enlistment, at 2:45 pm the decision was taken to raise the green flag again. However, the authorities – Maritime Police and lifeguards – remain vigilant on the coast.
According to a source at the Capitania de Tavira, the situation is considered “relatively normal”. “There are many sharks that pass off the Algarve and sometimes approach the coast in search of food”, said the same source from the captaincy. The species of shark is no longer known.
