Alexey Navalny poisoned. “Der Spiegel”: an oppositionist poisoned by a stronger than the previous form of the Noviczok

A drug from the Novichok group was used against Alexei Navalny, which was stronger than previous forms – according to the weekly “Der Spiegel”, Bruno Kahl, the head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), said during a secret conference.

Alexei Navalny was hospitalized on August 20 in Omsk, Siberia. He felt unwell on a plane flying from Tomsk to Moscow and lost consciousness. At the request of the family, two days later, he was transferred by air ambulance to the Charite clinic in Berlin, where he underwent a detailed examination and intensive treatment.

Last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel reported that Navalny had fallen victim to a “poison assassination attempt”, and a Bundeswehr laboratory examining his samples found that a Russian oppositionist had been poisoned with a Novichok chemical warfare agent.

The head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Bruno Kahl was to inform about how strong the poison was, during a “secret meeting” – wrote the weekly “Der Spiegel” on Friday, without giving details of these talks.

According to Kahl, this measure was supposed to be a stronger form of a combat measure than those known so far.

The weekly added that a delegation from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was to visit the Berlin hospital where Navalny is staying at the weekend.

What is nowiczok?

It became famous in 2018, when the former Russian intelligence agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia were attacked in Salisbury, UK. The police in the Isles informed then that 21 people were injured in total in connection with the attempt to poison Skripal, including the policeman who first reached the unconscious couple and gave them help.

Work on the substance was probably started in the Soviet Union as top secret. There is no information indicating that any country other than Russia has the production capacity. The very fact of revealing the existence of Novichok in 1991 met with a sharp reaction from the Russian authorities. The information was revealed by two scientists working in a laboratory near Moscow.

Nowiczok works on the same principle as other paralytic / convulsive substances. After entering the victim’s body (through the lungs or skin), it blocks the activity of the nervous system. The human being is paralyzed and successive organs gradually fail to obey. The whole body stops. This is to be accompanied by overwhelming pain and hallucinations. Later, the victim loses consciousness.
