Alexander Zverev Explores a Different Side of New York with Girlfriend Sophia Thomalla

If your friend has an idea…

Alexander Zverev (26) and New York, so far it has only ever been tennis. But in the past few days he has also gotten to know another side of the city. “Sophia had the idea,” says the Olympic champion.

Girlfriend Sophia Thomalla (33) designed a tourist program in preparation for the US Open. Empire State Building high, but also something to do mentally: visit the Museum of Modern Art, or Moma for short. Thomalla posted on Instagram how her friend was standing in front of a bale of straw. She wrote, “Hard to believe he’s testing to make sure the straw is real.”

Now Germany’s number 1 is talking about the bizarre scene before their start on Tuesday against Australian Aleksandar Vukic (27). Hamburger: “Moma was the highlight, even if it came across differently on Instagram. We were there for four hours. That’s when I started eating straw,” he says, laughing.

Why? “I mentally switched off. Some things were interesting, but then there is a bale of straw that you see on every field in Germany. In New York that’s just art, because there’s no straw in the city.”

Quite a gentleman, he went on the excursion for the sake of his beloved. “As a good friend, I had to go to museums and to the Empire State Building. I’ve been to a skyscraper before. That wasn’t so spectacular now,” he chatted away easily. “I live on the 50th floor or something. Whether it’s 50th or 80th, there’s not a big difference.”

So back to mom. “There was also a line on the television where everyone said: great.” Here, too, he couldn’t help but smile. In any case, the visit fulfilled the sense of variety. Thomalla then went to the Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, alone on Saturday. Indeed, Zverev had better things to do: he was training in the blazing sun.

The many spectators on Court 7 saw in the midday heat that Zverev had his left wrist bandaged. “I was lying weird. Nothing happened, not even a strange movement. It will go away in a day or two,” he gave the all-clear.

Lucky in disguise: It’s not the batting hand.
