Pliskova‘s Return Sparks Debate Over Training vs.Match Intensity

CALDAS DA⁢ RAINHA, PORTUGAL – Karolina Pliskova’s⁢ highly anticipated ⁢return to the WTA tour ‍following a lengthy hiatus has ignited discussion among fans and commentators,‍ centering on her candid admission that ‌she feels she “runs little” ⁣during matches and the stark difference between training and competitive play. The 33-year-old is working her way back⁣ into form, participating in smaller tournaments ahead of the Asian ‌swing and the WTA Finals.

Pliskova, a 2016 US Open finalist and 2021 Wimbledon finalist, revealed in a recent podcast appearance ⁣- alongside husband Michal Hrdlička, twin sister Kristýna Plíšková, and commentator František Hašl - that she experienced notable physical strain during her initial matches back. She ⁢described feeling “sharp” after completing a two-hour and 40-minute match, following a week of two‌ five-hour contests, emphasizing that ⁢match intensity ⁢is incomparable to any training regimen. “I am ⁤such a stupid type that I will ‍not get ‌into such a rhythm and as a level as in⁢ the match,” she‌ stated.

A seemingly off-the-cuff remark about her running during matches – “I‌ run much more in the match AI ⁢when someone comes, that I ‍run little,⁢ so I run less in training”‌ – resonated‌ with listeners, prompting laughter and further debate about⁤ her approach to physical readiness. Pliskova clarified that⁣ matches are “much more demanding for me both physically and mentally.”

Her return to competition began ‌at the WTA125 event in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, ⁣where she secured a 6:1, 4:6,‌ 7:5 victory over Tessah Andrianjafitrim in‍ the first round before falling to polina Jacenkova 7:5, 4:6, 4:6 in the second. Taylor Townsend Reveals Ostapenko Exchange After US Open Incident

Townsend Details Post-Match Confrontation with Ostapenko Following US Open Incident

NEW YORK – Following her contentious third-round match against Jelena Ostapenko at the US Open, Taylor Townsend revealed she confronted the Latvian player in the locker room, stating she told Ostapenko, “Don’t you ever put your finger in my face.” The incident on court, which drew important attention, occurred during Townsend’s 6-4, 7-6(5) victory on Friday.

Townsend explained she initially focused on maintaining composure during the match itself, prioritizing respectful dialog despite the escalating tension. “I was going to be honest and not disrespectful but be like ‘don’t you ever put your finger in my face’,” Townsend said, referencing the specific action that prompted her reaction. While proud of her verbal restraint on court, a subsequent review of the footage highlighted a reciprocal gesture from Townsend. “I was proud of the way I handled myself with my words, but when I watched it again I was like you are pointing at me like I am a child, don’t you ever put your finger in my face again.”

The exchange threatens to overshadow Townsend’s impressive run at Flushing Meadows, where she reached the quarterfinals in mixed doubles and finished as runner-up in women’s doubles alongside leylah Fernandez. Despite the controversy, Townsend’s overall performance at the tournament has been lauded, including victories over Antonia Ruzic and Mirra Andreeva in singles play before falling to Barbora Krejcikova. The incident with Ostapenko, however, has sparked wider discussion about on-court conduct and player interactions within the WTA.

Alcaraz Reclaims World No. 1 After US Open Victory

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor September 9, 2025
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Former American Pro Believes Current Alcaraz Would Defeat Prime Nadal at US open

New York, NY – In a bold assessment, former American tennis player James Blake ‌stated he believes Carlos ⁣Alcaraz in his current form would defeat a prime Rafael Nadal at the US Open. ⁤Blake’s comments come amid Alcaraz’s dominant run at the tournament and reignited‌ debate⁣ about generational comparisons ‍in the sport.

The discussion centers on whether Alcaraz’s all-court game and‌ physical prowess would prove too much for Nadal at his peak, specifically on the hard courts of Flushing ⁣Meadows. Blake’s perspective carries weight given his own triumphant ‌career and deep understanding of the nuances of the game, offering a compelling counterpoint to the reverence often afforded to nadal’s ⁣legendary status. This assessment arrives as alcaraz continues ⁤to cement his position as the sport’s leading figure, potentially ushering in a new era of dominance.

Blake’s assertion isn’t simply about current form versus past glory; it’s a recognition of Alcaraz’s uniquely complete skillset. “I think Carlos, right now, would beat prime Rafa at the US Open,” ‍Blake said. “Just ⁤the way he’s hitting the ball, the serve, the forehand, the drop shot… Rafa is the greatest, but Carlos has weapons that I don’t think anyone ⁤has‍ ever seen.”

Alcaraz has a 4-5 record⁤ against Novak Djokovic at tour-level events, with his most recent victory coming at the 2023 US Open.He faced Nadal three times, losing their first two encounters at the 2021 Madrid Open ‌and the 2022 Indian Wells Open, before securing a win against his ‌countryman ‌in Madrid later that same year. despite never having played Roger Federer professionally, Alcaraz’s rise has positioned him as a central figure in the post-“Big Three” landscape.
