Albuquerque insists on approaching Chega

In an interview with Público, the Madeiran leader recalls that “Sá Carneiro also did AD at a time when it was said that the CDS was fascist”

The president of the Regional Government of Madeira and the PSD-M returns today to be one of the protagonists of the national political agenda, once again defending an approach to the party of André Ventura.

After the declarations to Rádio Renascença, today the print edition of the newspaper Público highlights an interview with Miguel Albuquerque. In this conversation, gathered by the journalist Márcio Berenguer, the idea of a closer approximation of the PSD to the right-wing parties is well established. In addition to Chega, Albuquerque also defends contacts with the CDS and the Liberal Initiative.

Basically, Miguel Albuquerque explains that in Portugal the right needs to organize itself in order to face the left. The Madeiran leader warns that the regime will fall and repeats criticisms of the PS he rules with the influence of the PCP and BE.

“The PSD must lead a federation of parties on the right and the center right. Obviously, this goes through talks with the various parties – either with the CDS, with Chega, or with the Liberal Initiative. The PSD must do what Sá Carneiro did in 1979. He also did AD at a time when it was said that the CDS was fascist ”he explains.

“Sá Carneiro creates Democratic Alliance with PPM, CDS and the Reform Movement. And that year he won the elections with an absolute majority and then made the major reforms. He didn’t have time to do them all, but he did a series of necessary privatizations and reforms. We need a reformist government. A government that defeats this left-wing, conservative majority, which is stagnant and that will lead to the end of the regime, because the regime will fall ”, warns the president of PSD-Madeira.

For Miguel Albuquerque, Chega’s stance does not deserve as many repairs as those noted in Portugal. Chega, for Albuquerque, “is a nationalist, conservative party, as there are several at European level”.

In this line of thought, the Madeiran leader defends the initiation of dialogue in order to “arrive at a common program” that becomes a “design for Portugal”.

When asked whether the PSD should cross the line of an understanding with Chega, Albuquerque responds forcefully: “The line that is crossed is that I am tired of the useful idiots of the center right who are always playing the game from the left ”.

At another level, the president of the regional government again criticizes the decisions of the Constitutional Court and explains measures taken in Madeira such as the mandatory use of the mask, which he justifies as a position to defend public health. “A person who carries the virus can be compared to a bomber, because in this case, without wanting to or knowing, he can infect 100, 200 or 300 people. We have to condition this potential source of infection, in order to safeguard the health of others and the lives of others ”, he argues.
