Albert Heijn wants to deliver many more groceries at home NOW

Albert Heijn (AH) opens two so-called Home Shop Centers, a sort of distribution center for home delivery, in Oosterhout in Gelderland and Bleiswijk in South Holland. AH already opened such a center in Amsterdam at the end of last year. With the new locations, the group wants to significantly increase the number of deliveries.

Before the opening of the Amsterdam branch, Albert Heijn was able to deliver groceries to the home about 100,000 times a week. “The new locations provide more capacity and a better distribution,” said AH Monday at the announcement.

The new centers must open at the end of this year, beginning of next year. “Then the total capacity becomes 220,000 orders per week.” AH now has 850 delivery cars at its disposal. “With that expansion, we are moving in the direction of the 1,500 to 1,750,” says the AH spokesperson.

Like in the supermarket on the shelf

At this moment AH, including the relatively new location in Amsterdam, has five Home Shop Centers. “We also have them in Almere, Rotterdam, De Meern and Eindhoven. In these centers, groceries are almost on the shelves in the supermarket.”

According to the spokesperson, AH covers 96 percent of Dutch households with the current centers. “But we sometimes come up against the maximum capacity.”

In practice, this means that consumers can sometimes no longer choose every desired block. Those are the times when the groceries can be delivered.
