Ajax secured third place in Group B of the Europa League on Thursday evening. The Amsterdam team won 3-1 against AEK Athens, and are therefore certain of wintering in Europe. After the winter break, Ajax will continue in the intermediate round of the Conference League, in which it will face a club that was also active in that tournament in the group stage.

Ajax had to beat the Greek club to ensure their European wintering, and they succeeded thanks to two goals from Chuba Akpom and a goal from Kenneth Taylor. In the interim round of the Conference League, the Amsterdam team will meet a club that finished second in its own Conference League group.

The numbers one in each group in the Conference League go directly to the eighth finals, while numbers three and four are eliminated.

The clubs that Ajax could face in the intermediate round are Slovan Bratislava, AA Gent, Dinamo Zagreb, FK Bodø/Glimt, Legia Warschau, Ferencváros, Eintracht Frankfurt and Ludogorets. Those clubs all finished in second place in their Conference League group.

Legia Warschau was in the group with AZ. The Poles lost 1-0 in Alkmaar, but were too strong 2-0 at home on Thursday.

Meanwhile, another potential opponent, Ludogorets, is not unknown to Ajax. The people of the capital already took on the Bulgarians in the play-offs for the Europa League in August. Ajax won the away match convincingly 1-4, but lost 0-1 at home.

The draw for the Europa League intermediate round will take place next Monday, after the draw for the Champions League and Europa League. The first legs are scheduled for February 15, the returns for February 22. The winners of the intermediate round qualify for the eighth finals.
