San Francisco The apartment broker Airbnb does not want to force its employees back into the office even after the end of the corona pandemic. Employees will be able to decide permanently whether they want to work in the office or from home, wrote co-founder and boss Brian Chesky on Friday night.

The employees should be able to move anywhere in their current country at least without their salary changing. This is an important thing for US employees, among other things: life in San Francisco, where Airbnb has its headquarters, and in neighboring Silicon Valley is extremely expensive.

Many employees in the tech industry therefore used the home office regulations during the pandemic to move to cheaper areas of the USA. Some of their employers then wanted to reduce their income accordingly.

Moving permanently to another country is more complex – and Airbnb will not be able to support this this year, Chesky wrote. However, the employees are allowed to work from 170 countries for 90 days a year. However, you would still need a permanent residential address for tax issues, among other things. Only a small number of employees with tasks that can only be done in the office are exempt from the regulation.

It understands the concern of not knowing how well employees work if you don’t see them in the office, wrote the Airbnb boss. “For me the answer is simple: I trust you – and flexibility only works if you trust the people in your team.”

Chesky believes that traveling home workers are an important growth market for Airbnb. “In ten years, this way of working will dominate,” he wrote. In the second half of 2021, a fifth of all overnight stays on Airbnb came from bookings for more than one month.
