Air traffic – Frankfurt am Main – high security: Leipzig / Halle airport scores with pilots – economy

Leipzig (dpa) – Leipzig / Halle Airport enjoys a good reputation with pilots: In a study published on Thursday by the pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), the airport on the border between Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, together with Munich, got 1.6 best grade. Leipzig / Halle had already received a grade of 1.6 in the VC airport check last year. As in the previous year, Dresden Airport received a rating of 2.2.

Overall, the pilots were satisfied with the operational safety at Germany’s airports. “At this year’s airport check we can see a positive trend: At the same time, there have been some important improvements and no serious deteriorations,” said Janis Schmitt, the board member of the cockpit pilots’ union (VC).

The VC examined 28 airports in Germany – from the largest German airport in Frankfurt to small regional airports in Weeze (North Rhine-Westphalia), Memmingen (Bavaria) and on the North Sea island of Sylt. Among other things, the procedures for approach and departure were evaluated – even in poor weather conditions. In addition, what measures airport operators take to prevent an aircraft from accidentally crossing a runway in use.

A working group of the Cockpit Association has been subjecting German airports to an annual security check since 1978. Regional airports have also been included since 1996, provided that there are significant scheduled services there. The basis for the investigation is a catalog of criteria, which includes international regulations as well as the equipment of airports that is sensible from the pilot’s point of view.
