Pre-emergency: 300-499

Emergency: 500 – higher

PM10 or coarse particles, also called inhalable particles, are particles with a diameter of less than 10 micrometers but greater than 2.5 micrometers that are found in the air and are generated by mobile and stationary sources, natural or man-made, generally associated with uncontrolled combustion and combustion processes in motor vehicles, foundries, paints, ceramics and power plants.

General recommendations

In pre-emergency days and environmental emergencies, the use of masks is recommended for the elderly, children, pregnant women and the chronically ill.

You prefer public transport and/or car sharing.

Keep vehicles up to date with gas inspection and change engine oil before it expires.

Do not smoke inside the house, workplace or studio.

When buying a heater, make sure it’s certified for emissions, energy efficiency, and safety.

Do not burn leaves or litter.

Report anyone who does not comply with the measures adopted for alert, pre-emergency and emergency days.

Carry out maintenance on the heaters with the frequency indicated by the manufacturer.

Proper use of space heaters

Always use dry firewood (less than 25% moisture), distributed by established merchants.

Always use chopped firewood, do not burn whole logs.

In wood stoves, light the fire only with paper and dry wood.

In wood stoves, keep the draft fully open for at least 10 minutes after lighting the fire or recharging the wood.

Constantly check the fumes discharge through the flue of your stove or wood stove. If it is visible, open the stove draft to keep the flame alive. Never close the stove draft completely.

It prevents the formation of a layer of creosote and soot in the chimney, as this increases the risk of inflammation, reduces the heating capacity and the stove becomes more contaminated.

If possible, replace the old heater with one with lower emissions and higher efficiency.

Favor the use of alternative fuels such as: gas, electricity, briquettes, petroleum derivatives, pellets, among others.

All firewood traders must have a municipal patent, tax and forestry documentation, proving the legal origin of the firewood.

Ask for a receipt when purchasing firewood. With it you can assert your right as a consumer to exchange the product or refund your money if you are not satisfied with the purchase.
