Agus, the future biologist who takes photos, surfs and dreamed of living by the sea

“I’m living by the sea,” Agustina Ramírez thought with joy, when at 17 she got off the interurban bus that drove her from San Antonio to Las Grutas, and he found the bluest water he had ever dreamed of. His trip was longer, because, before, he had arrived from Pilar, in Buenos Aires, leaving behind his parents and his three brothers, who, full of fears, saw the only ‘baby’ in the family fly away. Or swimming in the direction of her dreams, rather, because the girl is also the only one with marine aspirations.

“I don’t know where that desire came from, but I had the ‘bug’ since I was a child. I wanted to be near the sea, and I would watch Discovery Channel documentaries. Hence the desire to be a marine biologist. And in the country, the only degree in the career is studied in San Antonio, at the University of Comahue. I got a scholarship and I didn’t hesitate. I arrived just on the day when I was beginning to study ”, said the girl.

The change was great, because it went from the options offered by a big city to the quiet life of a town. “Anyway, it gave me more time to study and I met colleagues who, like me, had come from different parts of the country, such as Entre Ríos, Río Gallegos, Córdoba …” recalled Agus.

Quickly, the sea became an object of study, fun, a walk and a meeting place. Thanks to him he discovered photography, which is now another of her great passions, and is even gaining ground on her aspirations as a biologist. Surfing also arrived, a sport that he loves and in which he is gaining more and more experience.

“Photography always interested me, but I saw it as something very far away. When I got here I saw the photos that a friend took when he was embarking, and I invested in a team. That’s where I started. I immediately felt, although it sounds corny, that the camera was like an extension of me. And that it made it easier for me to convey to people the experiences that are lived in the sea. If one tells, for example, that a whale ‘sticks’ to the boat in a navigation, it is difficult to feel how magical it is. And photography manages to transmit it ”, Agustina enthused.

With his camera, he managed to capture images that went viral, such as those that showed dolphins ‘drilling’ waves off the Las Grutas waterfront. On the other hand, that hobby brought her closer to the world of surfing. “A friend surfs and I started taking pictures of the group she surfs with. In the end, they convinced me to try the board and I loved it. Now I take advantage of it whenever I can, to gain experience and keep moving forward ”he confessed.

Today, at 26 years old, he is on the verge of ending his career, and he does not regret his choice. In addition, her ease of capturing images and her taste for dealing with people led her to discover that she wants target the area of outreach, focusing on species and ecosystem conservation. Although he does not imagine achieving it from pure information, but through other tools.

“To think that as a girl I only went to the beach 4 or 5 times. To San Clemente, Reta and Mar del Plata. Now I couldn’t live far from the sea ”, he revealed.

Your next destination, precisely, is Mardel, where you will evaluate job options. And she will take advantage of the trip to see her boyfriend, whom she met last summer, and with whom she is still connected from a distance.

On the other hand, although she loves Las Grutas, she fantasizes about beating life in other destinations. “Everything that is sea catches my attention. Seeing what biology is like and what water sports are on other beaches excites me. That is my passion ”, he sentenced.
