After the excitement at Place J.-d’Aragon, “Lattes, it’s not Chicago!” assures the mayor

The municipal council of Tuesday, May 17 was an opportunity for the mayor, Cyril Meunier, to take stock of the events that recently took place on Jacques-d’Aragon square, in Lattes-centre. Almost three months ago, a group of young people, notably from Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone and Pérols, appeared in the public parking lot next to the square. Their presence attracted young people from Lat and the mass effect, generating inappropriate words and incivility towards people frequenting the shopping center, created a stir among traders.

Immediate action

Under cover of the municipality and the DDSP, led by Yannick Blouin, the tone has hardened and the police, municipal and national, have multiplied the rounds in order to reassure users.

“To date, we have testimonies but no assault complaint has been filed,” confirm Francis Andreu, 1st deputy, and Éric Cardinale, head of the municipal police. “I think we avoided the point of deal because we intervened immediately”, specifies Cyril Meunier. And the latter to add “Lattes is a rather quiet city but located near Montpellier and the main roads. We are confronted with disorder like everywhere. But Lattes, it is not Chicago! The problem is that social networks and the ill-informed media have peddled and exploited bad information that became rumours. The situation, which seems to have calmed down today, was managed within the framework of the law, with professionals, and in collaboration with traders”. For now, “there is an urgent need to take an interest in young people for whom it is difficult to grow up in our society” he concluded. A project is under consideration.
