It was already known that Anna Veith (30), one of the major figures in skiing, is stepping down. Now the Austrian has spoken for the first time about her farewell after 14 years in the World Cup.
–
To this end, ORF is building a studio in the family hotel of the Veiths in Rohrmoos near Schladming to have TV expert Alexandra Meissnitzer – himself a former World Cup star – ask the questions.
–
“It’s a mix of many small reasons,” says Veith, “physically, it has become increasingly difficult over the years to get really fit. Last season I noticed that it takes more and more to get to the top. I still enjoyed skiing, but I didn’t see the point as much as before. And I’m just looking forward to a change in my life. I am happy to spend more time with the family and I can give them something back because they have always supported me throughout my career. »

Video messages as a surprise
Then it gets emotional. The ORF surprises Veith with various video greeting messages. In addition to her siblings, Austrian ski celebrities like Marcel Hirscher and the German Maria Höfl-Riesch, Lara Gut-Behrami also turns to Anna.
–
The Ticino woman finishes the messages and says: «You are an incredible person. You are ambitious, but so kind. You even helped me when we were fighting for the overall World Cup. Austria can be proud of you. I miss you!” After the superimposition of Gut-Behrami and Co. Veith’s eyes are wet, the messages have moved her to tears.

Veith had won Super G Olympic gold in Sochi, celebrated twice the overall World Cup, three World Cup titles and 15 World Cup victories. But she also had to survive serious injuries like multiple cruciate ligament tears. Fenninger now assures that the decision to resign was easier than expected: “It feels right now.” (md)
