After Italy, coronavirus continues to spread across Europe Abroad

Tuscany

One of the two cases of infection in Tuscany concerns a tourist in the city of Florence.

Austria

Two cases of the corona virus have been detected in the Austrian state of Tyrol. State Prime Minister Günther Platter has confirmed this. These are two 24-year-old men from Innsbruck. Tyrol is one of the most popular winter sports areas in Europe.

The two patients have a mild fever and have probably contracted the virus in neighboring Italy, Austrian media reported. They are the first cases in the Alpenland. In the city of Linz, in the north of the country, there may also be a case of infection. But that has not yet been confirmed by the investigation.

Spain

In the Spanish coastal region of Catalonia, an infection with the new corona virus has been reported for the first time. Earlier infections had been reported on the Spanish island of Majorca and the Canary Islands, but the virus has now also reached the Spanish mainland.

The health authorities in Catalonia will come on Tuesday afternoon during a press conference with more information, reports local media.

Croatia

An infection was also detected for the first time in Croatia. According to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, this is also a young man. He has been admitted to a hospital in Zagreb. The patient was in Milan from 19 to 21 February.

Switzerland

The corona virus has reached the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. The first infection was found there. The Health Minister, Alain Berset, told the media that the country is well prepared and the government is keeping a close eye on the situation. The virus was detected in the southern canton of Ticino.

Almost 70,000 people go from Italy to Ticino, who speaks Italian, every day to work there. According to Berset, there are no travel restrictions. Ticino is a sort of cove in the Italian region of Lombardy. Most of the coronavirus cases were found there in Italy.

Southern Italy

A case of coronavirus was also reported in southern Italy on Tuesday morning. It is about a woman from the northern Italian city of Bergamo. Authorities in the Sicilian city of Palermo said they tested positive for the virus. She was admitted to a hospital with flu symptoms and placed in quarantine.

North-Italy

The region most affected is Lombardy, where so far 212 people have tested positive for the presence of the corona virus. Seven people died of the virus there. More than two hundred Italians have been infected.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Tuesday that Italy is a safe country for tourism, “probably safer than many others,” he said at a press conference.

In ten European countries

The virus from China has now surfaced in ten countries of the European Union. This concerns almost 340 cases, of which fifty have been found outside Italy.

Of those fifty patients, one has died in France and another thirteen are ill. In Italy, seven people have already died from the virus and only one patient has recovered.

A school in the north-west of England was closed on Tuesday after the return of a group of students and teachers who had been on skiing holidays in Italy, SkyNews reported. The principal wants to “minimize the risk of infection” and keeps the school in Northwitch closed for the rest of the week.
