A cable duct was also damaged in an embankment fire at Hamburg’s Sternschanze train station on Thursday evening. The consequences for long-distance rail travel continue: There are still cancellations and delays.
Long-distance traffic was affected at least until the end of the working day on Saturday, said a railway spokesman. It is still unclear when the disturbances will end. Deutsche Bahn informed on their website about the current impairments. Travelers should inquire there in advance about their connections.
Several ICE connections affected
According to Deutsche Bahn, several ICE lines are affected. On the route Kiel / Lübeck – Hamburg – Hanover – Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe – southern Germany, there are failures between northern Germany and Hanover. There are delays on the routes Kiel/Hamburg – Hanover – Frankfurt – Stuttgart/Switzerland. The ICE trains between Hamburg – Berlin – Erfurt – Munich start and end in Berlin, as do the EC trains Hamburg – Berlin – Dresden – Prague. ICE/IC and EC trains on the Hamburg – Bremen – Cologne and Southern Germany connections start and end in Hamburg-Harburg instead of in Hamburg-Altona. The IC trains Hamburg – Denmark, on the other hand, start and end in Altona. There are failures on the RE5 line between Hamburg and Cuxhaven. RE7 and RE70 trains between Kiel and Hamburg start and end in Altona.
Deutsche Bahn recommends using the S1 and S3 S-Bahn lines between Altona and the main station and the S3, S31 or metronom between the main station and Harburg. Local trains run on line RE70 between Altona and Kiel.
1,000-wire copper cable being repaired
The cable fire was near the Sternschanze train station – on the so-called connecting train, which runs from Altona via Diebsteich, Sternschanze and Dammtor to the main station. It is one of the busiest routes nationwide. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but the police are currently not assuming external influence. The entire communication on this route between the signal boxes runs over the affected cable, the railway said. About the points and the signals would be controlled. According to the railway spokeswoman, the cable is a 1,000-wire copper cable. That would be very difficult to get back. The extensive repair work continues.
