According to The Guardian, in an audio broadcast on Taliban-controlled Afghan radio and television last Saturday, Akhundzada said: “We will flog women… we will stone them to death in public for adultery.”
He justified the move as a continuation of the Taliban’s fight against Western influence.
Akhundzada called those who would consider this a violation of women’s rights “servants of Satan.”
According to the publication, Afghan women are now virtually powerless to protect themselves from persecution and injustice.
It was previously reported that in January, representatives of the Taliban in Afghanistan ordered the closure of beauty salons for women in the country and prohibited them from working in shopping centers.
In November 2023, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid stated that they are not obliged to comply with UN laws unless their government is recognized as a member of the UN. If recognized, Kabul will accept international norms in accordance with Sharia.
