Addressing Mental Exhaustion in Hong Kong: More than Just a Public Health Issue

The two yellow ducks may come at the right time. Murder cases, wounding cases, and ethics cases occurred again and again, and the social atmosphere was not getting better. Even walking on the street, he was a little more guarded against others. This is certainly not a good thing for a community.

After the homicide at the Plaza Hollywood last week, mental health has received attention, and people from all walks of life have asked the government to increase resources to meet the needs of the mentally ill. That’s true, but there’s more to it than that. Speaking of “disease” seems to be a matter for a small number of people, and it is a matter for doctors and patients. However, most people in Hong Kong are facing various pressures and negative emotions. Instead of saying “sickness”, it is better to say “Hong Kong is tired”.

Disagreement can lead to fights in the market, and even quarrels occur from time to time on crowded buses and MTR. “You are under pressure and I am under pressure” turned out to be a “golden sentence” 16 years ago. Sixteen years have passed, Hong Kong people are now facing more than just pressure. Watching the real estate market go down, some people feel anxious; relatives and friends emigrate to other places, and those who stay behind will inevitably feel lonely; due to the sudden changes in the political environment, some people are depressed; let alone grassroots families. I don’t know if I will continue to study in school.

When you turn on the news, you are not talking about organ donation, or you are arguing about the two-yuan ride discount or three-way discount. The government said “Happy Hong Kong” and seized the opportunity, but in fact the public’s feeling is very different. Although the “service attitude today” can’t be bad, if the citizens worry about family affairs day and night, or argue about money and money, it’s human nature to have a bad tone and attitude.

The ideal situation is to deal with the mood first, and then deal with the matter. But the reality is that if things cannot be handled, some people cannot handle their emotions. Would it be unrealistic to ask people who are emotionally disturbed not to be affected by their emotions? Of course, no matter how bad the mood is, you can’t hurt or kill others, but this at least reminds us that being tired in society cannot just be regarded as a medical or public security issue. Strengthening patrol law enforcement and mental health services is only the most basic work, but the social mood and the unsatisfactory life of Hong Kong people are the responsibility of all policy areas and all bureau chiefs.

The councilor “checked in” with the yellow duck, hoping that the public would smile again. The yellow duck may bring a boom for a few days, but after the boom, whether Hong Kong people can live a happy life is actually the work KPI of officials and parliamentarians.
