Adapted gymnastics classes to better fight cancer

This afternoon there are ten, nine women and a man moving to rhythmic music. Between two instructions from Isabelle Moine, the specialized sports educator who runs the sessions, there are many laughs. Because the goal of these sessions is to better support psychologically the cancer. Sylvie has been coming every week since 2016: “when we say the word cancer, people are afraid and we quickly find ourselves isolated, here we can talk with people, sick or not, tell ourselves that we are not alone and really break the isolation”.

Now a volunteer in the cancer league, Sylvie sees the difference these gym sessions make “when they arrive, people are sad, withdrawn and then after a few sessions, we reclaim our body, we find a smile and we flourish, a bit like a flower”.

“Adapted gymnastics helps to better support the treatments”

Physical activity also has medical benefits in the fight against cancer. “We see that after a session, there is less fatigue than in a person who does not move” says Isabelle Monk. Sylvie doesn’t say anything else “we sleep better, we understand better the various muscular pains or related to the disease”.

Benefits also largely due to the work of Isabelle Moine to adapt the exercises: “each case is different so you have to be very attentive to each one, pay attention to the intensity, to fatigue, it’s always a challenge”. It organizes two sessions per week, one outside, at the Roseraie, dedicated to cardio and the other at the Salle du Carre Bleu at the Couronneries to improve flexibility and muscle building.

Result, after the moment of relaxation that ends each session, _“we hang around to leave, we chat between us_, laughs Sylvie, and we end up leaving swollen, and waiting for the next session. ”

The sessions are accessible to anyone with cancer without restriction, under treatment or not. Registrations are made with the League against Cancer.
