MADRID (CulturaOcio).– Josephine Chaplin, actress and sixth of the 11 children born to the legendary Charlie Chaplin, died on July 13 in Paris at the age of 74. She appeared as a child in ‘Candilejas’ and ‘The Countess of Hong Kong’ with her father and filmed under the orders of Pier Paolo Pasolini in ‘The Canterbury Tales’ or the Spanish Jesús Franco in ‘Jack the Ripper’ (1976).
Chaplin starred opposite Laurence Harvey in Menahem Golan’s 1972 ‘Flight into the Sun’, an Israeli film about a group of people trying to leave the Soviet Union to escape anti-Semitism and political repression. That same year he also appeared with Vittorio De Sica and Maurice Ronet in ‘L’odeur des fauves’.

Other of his most notable works were ‘The boy from the bay’ (1984), by Daniel Petrie, with Liv Ullmann and Kiefer Sutherland, and in 1988, when he played Hadley Richardson, the first wife of Ernest Hemingway, in a miniseries starring Stacy Keach.
Born in Santa Monica on March 28, 1949, Josephine Hannah Chaplin was the third of eight children born to Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O’Neill, a British actress and daughter of Nobel Prize Winner for Literature Eugene O’Neill.
Chaplin, who lived for a long time in Paris, acted mainly in French films, such as ‘Red Nights’ (1974), by Georges Franju, and ‘In the Shadow of a Summer’ (1976), by Jean-Louis van Belle. His last work dates from 1994 ‘Ciudad Baja’, a film starring Mike Connors and again directed by the Spanish Jesús Franco.
Josephine managed Chaplin’s Paris office for years on behalf of her brothers and sponsored a statue of her father in Waterville, Ireland, where her family often vacationed.
She was married to Greek businessman Nikki Sistovaris from 1969 until their divorce in 1977, and then lived with French actor Maurice Ronet until his death in 1983. Her second husband was archaeologist Jean-Claude Gardin, whom she married in 1989 and stayed with until his death in 2013.
