The Action Rébellion Bruxelles group began occupying a crossroads located in the Bois de la Cambre in Ixelles on Thursday at the start of the evening, to protest against the reopening of wood to car traffic after a period of closure during confinement. The action, called “Reclaim the Park,” started around 5:30 p.m.

“There are two reasons for our action, one concrete and the other more symbolic,” according to the Action Rebellion group. “First of all, during the closure, the Bois de la Cambre had become a green and pleasant place where families, walkers and cyclists could enjoy the fresh air in peace without being disturbed by traffic, which we think is precious because there is a clear lack of green spaces in Brussels. It should not be forgotten that many Brussels residents do not have a garden or a terrace. “
The organization adds that it wants to “clearly say no to the return of the world before the pandemic because it was toxic. The resumption of automobile traffic in the park symbolizes this return to the toxic system that we are vigorously fighting against ”.
The group therefore requests that car traffic be immediately banned in the Bois de la Cambre and permanently “so that this place can regain its function as a rest island”.
Action Rebellion claims more broadly that the government and politicians are telling people the truth about the climate emergency. “We want a quick and concrete plan to phase out CO2 emissions. We want the transition to a sustainable society within the limits of the planet to be decided in citizens’ assemblies, ”concludes the citizen movement.
