Abuse of the disabled parking card is getting out of hand, says Glenn Immanuel of the Amsterdam police.

Last week, law enforcement and police officers checked car owners with a disabled parking card. “Eight fully vetted cards, six taken for abuse. So 75 percent. And the percentage was even higher in previous stocks,” Immanuel said on LinkedIn.

The police speak of alarming figures. Especially now that parking rates are rising. “Municipalities lose tons of parking fees and people with disabilities often can’t find a place,” she says.

Those in possession of a European Disabled Parking Card (GPK) can park for free in disabled car parks throughout Europe, which can be read on the website AT5 / NH News.

The card is tied to a person and not to the license plate. Amsterdam residents can also park throughout the city with their card and parking permit, although there is no official parking.

Coincidentally with the car

According to Immanuel, the system makes effective control difficult. He says the application is only successful if the driver is with her or her car.

This is not a new problem. “Because the card is behind the dashboard window with the photo of the cardholder facing down, law enforcement can’t see who parked the car,” she said. news hour to in mei 2019.

“This favors theft, many squares are entered to steal cards. According to interest groups, a parking card for the disabled on the black market is worth around 1500 euros.”

Three years after death

Immanuel also points out that the fine for misuse of the card has been reduced from € 400 to € 310. “We have already come across cases where a deceased person’s card was still in use three years after death. So the fine did not exceed the benefit enjoyed.”

At the end of last year, two other city officials were fired sentenced to civil service due to fraud with disabled parking cards. Several customers also received community service orders and a fine.
