Are Bishops Lonely? How do you deal with that? Is loneliness something negative or can it also be positive? The Catholic Bishop Bertram Meier and the Protestant regional bishop Axel Piper give answers in “About God and the World: The Faith Podcast”. By telling of their experiences – and of moments in which they may not have consciously sought solitude, but rather solitude. “Sometimes you have the feeling that you have communicated,” says Piper.

Alone, loneliness, lost – there are many facets. And there are clergymen who become lonely in old age without friends, as there are those who flourish. Bertram Meier emphasizes how important friendships are – and how important it is to cultivate them. He is more concerned about younger priests who are not part of a social network, he says.
In this last episode of the audio format, a conversation about loneliness turns into a conversation about topics currently controversial in the area of the Catholic Church – such as a problematic image of a priest or the ordination of women. In the end, it’s literally about the end: the question of how Meier and Piper feel about assisted suicide. No one should be left alone to die, says Piper. And Meier also says: “As a church, we will do everything imaginable that people do not have to die lonely.”
