Abortion issue puts pressure on formation: CD&V threatens to pull the plug if parliament allows relaxation

Coens’ démarche can be seen as an attempt to put pressure on his coalition partners.

Open VLD has heard that there will be no vote on the proposal today. Either it goes back to committee, or it is amended, or it goes to the Council of State. Coens’ threat may therefore be unnecessary, but it is mainly indicative of the atmosphere between government parties.

“I hope it will be evacuated,” said parliamentary party leader Barbara Pas (Vlaams Belang) in “Villa Politica”. Just like CD&V, N-VA and CDH, Vlaams Belang is opposed to the relaxation of abortion legislation.
