Of the Javan rhinoceros, only 72 are still living in the wild, 39 males and 33 females. The special images of the animal were shared on Twitter by the Indonesian minister of the environment, Siti Nurbaya Bakar. According to Reuters, the recordings provide a unique insight into the life of one of the world’s largest mammals.
The images have now been shared more than 12,000 times via social media. They were shot with a hidden camera at Ujung Kulon National Park. Experts estimate the mammal to be about seven years old.
Threatened with extinction
Javan rhinoceroses once lived in the wild nature of Northeast India and Southeast Asia. Of the five rhinoceros, this species is most threatened with extinction. “Let’s keep looking at and loving the rhinoceros,” Bakar wrote on her Twitter. “Taking care of and loving them is the same as taking care of and loving Indonesia.”
