Lilien striker Aaron Seydel is definitely missing at the start of the season, but he is on the mend. He has not played a competitive game for three months

DARMSTADT – In the offensive of the second division soccer team SV Darmstadt 98 things are looking anything but good at the moment. Luca Pfeiffer is back at his home club FC Midtjylland after his loan, but he’s unlikely to stay there – the latest rumor has it that VfB Stuttgart are said to be interested in him. None of this concerns the lilies anymore, they have to find a replacement. With Phillip Tietz and Aaron Seydel, the Lilien still have two professionals with experience in the second division in the squad – but Seydel will definitely miss the start of the season.
He was diagnosed with meningitis, the club announced on Wednesday. He is in the hospital for observation this week, after a few days of rest he should then gradually increase the load in consultation with the medical department. “After I had a headache, tiredness and dizziness for a long time, I went to the University Hospital in Mainz for a medical examination, where meningitis was diagnosed,” said Seydel in a club statement. “I would like to thank our team doctor, Dr. Alexander Lesch, and the Mainz University Hospital for the excellent care. I would also like to thank SV 98 for giving me the peace and support I needed to manage the symptoms until the final diagnosis was made Reason to go. I’m on the mend now and I hope my recovery continues as well.”
The 26-year-old striker was last seen in a friendly against Viktoria Griesheim on June 24, when he was at least busy signing autographs. At the SV 98 Media Day last week he was completely absent – which was noticeable because in some years players had even come to this event on crutches. Mathias Wittek, for example, dragged himself there, although it was clear that he would hardly be able to play in the upcoming season.
The last time the 1.99 meter tall Seydel was in a competitive game was on April 9, when he was injured and replaced in Nuremberg. Particularly bitter for Seydel, who had already missed the start of the season due to Achilles tendon problems, was then pushed aside by Pfeiffer and Tietz and recommended himself after his strong comeback with six goals. His contract was recently extended by two years until 2024, which at least means there is no pressure on him. But for the SV 98 – now even more than before.
