An 18-year-old former student from a Russian Orthodox school blew himself up today in the building of the monastery’s secondary school. The perpetrator was wounded; at least one other teenager was injured, police were quoted as saying by AFP and Russian news agencies. The bomber, who used an improvised explosive device, died of blood loss, TASS reported, citing a source in law enforcement.

According to law enforcement, the attack took place at the Orthodox Classical High School next to the Vvedenski Vladichni Convent in the town of Serpukhov near Moscow.

Police are already evacuating teachers and students; the data on the victims are being specified. Anonymous police sources, quoted by TASS, RIA Novosti and Interfax, reported 7 wounded. A man who entered the monastery before the explosion has been detained.

According to reports in the “Telegram”, quoted by the electronic newspaper “Lenta”, the bomber planned to blow up his device during the morning prayer. At first he was sitting on the steps near the entrance with a machete in his hands, but after the explosion he tried to crawl inside the building because his legs were torn off.
The device may have been triggered accidentally, Lenta suggests.

Such attacks in public places and schools have long been rare in Russia, but in recent years there have been more frequent incidents, especially in shooting, which have recently led to more stringent gun laws on President Vladimir Putin’s orders. / BTA
