A stroll among the neighbors of Atlanta

Marietta, Roswell, Kennesaw, and Decatur… they are worth a look!

Of course in Georgia there is Atlanta, the capital, the largest city in the southern United States, with its headquarters multinationals and his chic neighborhoods and its many museums. But not only ! Its neighbors are many and diverse and offer visitors as many opportunities to discover the secret corners of the Georgia. Presentation of these Georgian escapes.

Marietta

Just 10 minutes west of Atlanta, the town of Marietta is a very pleasant place because it has a “small town” atmosphere with its many pedestrians and charming flowery streets. However, the old and the modern coexist very well and we can see the old military cemetery (Marietta National Cemetery) right next to brand new buildings. After visiting the Gone with the Wind Museum, and a walk in the heart of Glover Park you will enjoy a dinner on one of the terraces of the restaurants of Marietta Square.

Roswell

Life is really good in Roswell, a small town in the suburb of Atlanta (About 30 minutes), which flows happy days along the Chattahoochee River. Created in 1839, the village once belonged to the tribe of Cherokees. From now on, Roswell offers lovely walks on the tree-lined alleys, the many squares where historic statues are enthroned and the many restaurants and shops.

The Welcome Center provides good information on the history of the city and offers guided tours of a few hours in the alleys and between the houses of the 19th century. Do not miss a visit to the Bulloch Hall, the former home of the mother of Theodore Roosevelt, which traces the history of this family and the period of the civil war. Finally, if you like animals, go to Chattahoochee Nature Center, this animal rehabilitation center in the heart of several hectares of nature and rivers.

Kennesaw

Small in size but tall in the role she played during the Civil War, Kennesaw is a charming town that bears the traces of its history even today. In the heart of the city, the small wooden houses follow one another, in a somewhat outdated atmosphere. This is where we find the Museum of the Civil War and the Locomotive, to do if you are in the city center. The local shops all have a large number of articles on the Civil War.

Fancy a breath of fresh air or a climb? Go northwest of Atlanta, towards the kennesaw rock, the only rocky escarpment in the region. The park is a hiking park known and appreciated for having known how to preserve the vestiges of the war (at the bend of the paths, there are the old cannons of the Confederates). In the same genre, the Pickett’s Mill Battlefield, which was the setting for the famous battle of 1864, is one of the best-preserved battlefields in the country.

If with all this, you are not expert on the subject of the Civil War, it is because you are doing it on purpose.

Decatur

Small town glued to Atlanta, Decatur is best known for its superb courthouse which dates from 1823. It seems that time has indeed stood still here, especially when walking in the streets, between the shops, galleries of paintings and the many restaurants. Refreshing.
