Naima added, during a press conference coinciding with World AIDS Day, Tuesday, that the Egyptian government is a historic step since 2014 to secure treatment for individuals through the antiviral treatment (ART) program, and indicated that there are an estimated 38 million people living with HIV. She emphasized that World AIDS Day is an important platform to highlight the role of relevant institutions, United Nations organizations and civil society in support of prevention and treatment services for patients with HIV and the most vulnerable groups, pointing to the continuous support and cooperation between the World Health Organization and the Egyptian government in the national response to combating HIV Since the discovery of the first case in Egypt in 1986, the organization has also directed the Egyptian response to be in the context of global priorities in combating HIV, in line with the national response and the United Nations strategy and goals for sustainable development, in addition to continuous cooperation with the Egyptian government to strengthen its health systems. For her part, Randa Abu El-Hassan, the representative of the United Nations Development Organization’s office for Egypt, praised the efforts made by the Egyptian government and the Ministry of Health and Population to address HIV (AIDS), and praised the state’s efforts to address the emerging corona virus pandemic, as well as health promotion. The general public for all Egyptians through the “100 Million Health” campaign, which inspired the world as one of the largest state-led health campaigns, referring to the cooperation of the United Nations Development Program with partner United Nations organizations and in coordination with the Ministry of Health and Population, to ensure the continuity and sustainability of health care services during the face of the Corona pandemic , Including services to provide health care to people living with AIDS.

She drew attention to the efforts of the Ministry of Health and Population to strengthen health care services to combat AIDS, during the face of the Coronavirus pandemic, which contributed to ensuring the ability of people with AIDS to continue obtaining treatment by disbursing stocks of antivirals sufficient for several months, as well as allocating safe corridors for them to spend. Treatment in hospitals and medical centers to protect them from exposure to infection with the emerging corona virus, adding that the Ministry of Health and Population adopted an innovative model to ensure the sustainability of anti-AIDS services and to achieve comprehensive coverage among infected persons through treatment programs that work to reduce harm, in addition to linking services to combat « AIDS »with some other health issues such as infection (C virus) and other communicable and blood-borne diseases, thus contributing to the elimination of societal stigma associated with AIDS and expanding the connection of people living with HIV and those affected by it with health services related to prevention And treatment on the other hand.

Abul-Hassan affirmed the continuation of cooperation between the United Nations Development Program, the Ministry of Health and Population, partner United Nations organizations and development partners in order to strengthen Egypt’s national response to combating AIDS as part of Egypt’s strategy towards eliminating AIDS by 2030, pointing out that healthy citizens are among the most important pillars of achieving development. Sustainable development as the UNDP Strategic Plan for the period 2018-2021 indicates that health is a result, indicator and key driver for moving forward towards achieving the 2030 vision and the sustainable development goals.

Christina Albertine, Regional Representative for the Middle East and North Africa for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, thanked Dr. Hala Zayed, Minister of Health and Population, Dr. Heba El-Sayed, Director of the National AIDS Control Program, directors of the National Program for Tuberculosis Control, the National Hepatitis Program, and the National Health Program. She explained that to ensure the continuity and sustainability of providing HIV services during the emerging coronavirus crisis, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV (AIDS) and civil society, worked to build the capacity of workers. In the health field, she also expressed appreciation for the decision of the Egyptian government and the Ministry of Health and Population to approve treatment with opioid substitutes, which can save lives and give people with opioid drug use disorders an opportunity to start a new life and live a normal life, stressing the importance of global solidarity and shared responsibility in overcoming On the emerging corona virus, eliminating the AIDS epidemic, and ensuring the right to health for everyone.
