A Puerto Rican seeks to be mayor of New York

Washington D.C. – Puerto Rican Dianne Morales, who has led non-profit groups, has joined the group of candidates for mayor of New York.

She may be the first Puerto Rican to be a candidate for the position, in a city where about 800,000 people of Puerto Rican origin reside.

Previously, Puerto Ricans Herman Badillo, Fernando Ferrer and Adolfo Carrión have been candidates for mayor.

Morales was the chief executive officer of the anti-poverty organization Phips Neighborhoods in the Bronx. He resides in Brooklyn, where he was born, along with his two children and more recently with his parents, both natives of Puerto Rico.

“We have had 109 mayors in New York. One was black. No woman. None Latino. None indigenous. None Asian ”, Morales indicated when he officially announced his candidacy on Thursday night, in an event that took place on the Internet.

When officially announcing her aspiration to the Democratic candidacy for mayor of New York, the Puerto Rican Morales maintained that she is not a traditional candidate, since she has not spent her life thinking about the position, as can happen with many. “This is the time to select the future,” he said, emphasizing that his aspiration wants to “create a movement” that reflects the diversity of the city.

The Democratic primary will take place in June, ahead of the municipal elections in November 2021.

There are at least eight interested in the position, including City Comptroller Scott Stringer; Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams; former Public Health Commissioner Kathryn Garcia; and the municipal councilor Carlos Menchaca.

Also announced interest were former legal counsel to Mayor Bill de Blasio, Maya Wiley; former Secretary of the Federal Department of Housing Shaun Donovan; and former Veteran Services Commissioner Loree Sutton. That group would be joined by Ray McGuire, who resigned from one of Citibank’s vice presidencies with the idea of launching into the race.

Morales can attract progressive voters. She has been a defender of the idea of defunding the Police, a proposal that seeks to use funds assigned to that department for prevention initiatives and to reduce the intervention of agents in social problems.

Among the mayoral candidates, Morales said she was the first to propose the diversion of funds to be used in independent programs that do not involve the use of force.

“I want to have that conversation. I don’t think anyone thinks of a safe community and thinks of the police, not even older adults. We need to drastically reimagine it, because it’s not working. “Morales recently told NY1 network.

It has also highlighted, among other things, its intention to focus on affordable housing and address the COVID-19 emergency.

Morales served on the founding board of the nonprofit Jumpstart, which prepares children for kindergarten.

According to his website, he completed his bachelor’s degree at Stony Brook University and completed graduate studies at the School of Education at Harvard University and Columbia University.
