Washington D.C. – Puerto Rican Dianne Morales, who has led non-profit groups, has joined the group of candidates for mayor of New York.
She may be the first Puerto Rican to be a candidate for the position, in a city where about 800,000 people of Puerto Rican origin reside.
Previously, Puerto Ricans Herman Badillo, Fernando Ferrer and Adolfo Carrión have been candidates for mayor.
Morales was the chief executive officer of the anti-poverty organization Phips Neighborhoods in the Bronx. He resides in Brooklyn, where he was born, along with his two children and more recently with his parents, both natives of Puerto Rico.
“We have had 109 mayors in New York. One was black. No woman. None Latino. None indigenous. None Asian ”, Morales indicated when he officially announced his candidacy on Thursday night, in an event that took place on the Internet.
