WHO Secretary-General Tedros Adhanom Gebresus said that the organization has given the official name to the coronavirus, “COVID-19”.

Adhanum added, “We had to find a name that does not symbolize a geographic area or an animal, an individual or a group of people, while it is easy to pronounce and has a relationship with the disease … It is important to have a name to avoid the use of degrading names and also to avoid incorrect poisonings.”

Activists on social media questioned sarcastically if giving a new name to this deadly virus would change something on the ground and limit its spread, especially since the death toll from the virus rose in China to 1113 people Wednesday, after Hubei Province reported 94 new deaths .

In its daily update of the situation regarding the spread of the virus, the Hubei Health Commission also confirmed that 1,638 new infections were recorded in the central province, which was the focus of the virus last December.

Virus vaccine within 18 months

The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanum Gebresus, confirmed on Tuesday that the emerging coronavirus is a “very serious threat” to the world.

“Having 99% of cases in China will remain a major state of emergency for this country, but this poses a very serious threat to the rest of the world,” said Gypressus at the opening of the WHO conference on the epidemic in Geneva.

In two days, 400 scientists will review means to fight the epidemic, and will discuss possible methods of infection and treatments.

The World Health Organization announced Tuesday, in light of questions about when it is possible to discover the treatment of the emerging coronavirus, that it is “possible that the virus vaccine will be ready within 18 months.”

Chinese scientists worry that respiratory disease has shifted to adapt to new people infected faster than SARS.

Scientists believe the virus has spread from a dirty fish market in Wuhan, China.

The data on the virus is changing day by day, and the professor at George Washington University, Liana Wayne, said that the problem is that they do not know much about the virus, nor how and how quickly it has spread so far.

Scientists expect it will take several weeks to truly see how widespread the disease is.

Health ministers of the European Union will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday in Brussels to discuss coordinated measures against the epidemic.
