Sofie (28) from Volkel and Bastiaan (29) from Tilburg are back at the place where their special love story began a year ago: the Sziget pop festival in Hungary. She posted a message on Instagram asking if anyone wanted to join her. One of her friends had dropped out, so she had one ticket left. Bastiaan opted for the adventure and got into the car. The spark immediately flew and the rest is history.
The couple did not travel by car, like last year, but by special festival train to the Hungarian pop festival. They have booked a hotel nearby. “Because surviving six days of the festival and then also six days at the festival campsite, that is impossible,” says Bastiaan.
Last year’s car journey took fourteen hours. During that ride, Sofie and the then complete stranger Bastiaan got to know each other well. “But I thought it was exciting, really a leap of faith”, Sofie looks back.
“We missed each other and then you know it’s all right.”
Over the past year, the two have gotten to know each other even better. “After the festival we camped together in Austria and then you talk a lot. That went well,” says Bastiaan. “We both loved to travel, cook and discover new things.” So they also went together to Madeira in Spain, Marakesh in Morocco and Étretat in France.
“But we also traveled separately from each other. Me to Scandinavia and Sofie to Thailand. You wish each other that, but we also missed each other and then you know it’s all right,” says Bastiaan with a smile.
After they have visited many Brabant festivals together, the couple in Sziget realize that it all happened very quickly. “We are both busy and the year has flown by,” says Sofie. “Our trip last year was never meant to be a date, we went into it really blank.”
“Something like that happens to you and you don’t find it when you look for it.”
Sofie thinks that’s why it happened that way. “It really happened to us. If you consciously try to find someone like that, you probably won’t succeed.” They have had many reactions to their story at Omroep Brabant last year. “We are really recognized for that, but many people say they would not dare to place my call from last year.”
But she’s glad she did. “I discovered Tilburg through Bastiaan, because I never went there. Now I think it’s such a nice city that I want to live there together.” They don’t know when yet. “But it will happen anyway,” Sofie says firmly.
“They asked if I’m going to ask her to marry me.”
For now, Sofie and Bastiaan are going to enjoy their second Sziget together. “It is the best way to celebrate our anniversary. We have made a whole schedule of which performances we want to visit,” says Bastiaan.
The two will see what the future brings. “Via TikTok, someone asked if I’m going to ask her to marry me,” says Bastiaan. “Well that might be a bit early,” says Sofie with a laugh. “But our unique story is not finished yet.”
