a look at our human behavior

Animal Day, celebrated on October 4 in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, is a special occasion to reflect on our relationship with the living beings that share our planet. In the department of Cesar and the city of Valledupar, this date becomes relevant, as they face significant challenges in terms of animal welfare.

It is undeniable that the relationship between humans and animals is complex and varied. Throughout history, animals have been our loyal companions, sources of food, and objects of abuse. However, today, we are called to reconsider our way of interacting with them.

Globally, recent reports revealed the 12 most endangered animals on earth that could disappear in the coming years, these are the chimpanzee, the tiger, the blue whale, the lemur, the vaquita porpoise, the Sumatran rhinoceros, the gorilla the western pangolin, the marmoset monkey, the African elephant, the red wolf and the common hamster.

In Cesar and Valledupar, the situation of the animals presents important challenges. One of them is the care of stray animals. Many dogs and cats roam the streets without a home or proper medical care. The lack of sterilization and adoption programs, as well as indifference towards these living beings, has contributed to a problem of overpopulation and unnecessary suffering.

Another major challenge is the illegal trafficking of wild animals. The region is rich in biodiversity, but hunting and illegal trade in endangered species endanger the local fauna, so much so that the consumption of animals that in other times were only seen as natural ornaments has opened up, such as iguanas, squirrels, among others. Stronger action is required from authorities to stop this illicit activity and protect species at risk.

Education is a fundamental tool in promoting animal welfare. It is essential that schools and the community in general are involved in raising awareness about the importance of respecting and protecting animals. Promoting responsible pet adoption and respect for wildlife should be a priority.

In addition, it is necessary to strengthen the laws and regulations related to animal protection in Cesar and Valledupar. This includes implementing more severe penalties for those who mistreat animals and establishing effective mechanisms to control the stray animal population.

On Animal Day, we remember that we are responsible for the health and well-being of all forms of life that share our environment. We must work together as a society to improve the situation of animals in Cesar and Valledupar, promoting a more humane and compassionate approach towards them.

From EL PILÓN we urge a serene reflection on the sacred value of our nature and everything that makes it up, but more than a meditation it is required that, together, we help promote concrete actions to protect and respect the animals in our region. Animal Day is an opportunity to remember that all living beings deserve dignified and compassionate treatment.
