“Benedetta” should have originally been released in the fall of 2019, then in the spring of 2020. We won’t see it until May 2021.

In a normal world, the kickoff of the 73rd Cannes Film Festival 2020 would have taken place on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. Canceled, the event however announced that a list of films labeled “Cannes 2020” would be released in early June. The idea? According to the festival’s general delegate, Thierry Frémaux, and its president, Pierre Lescure, it is a question of promoting, by a special label, the films which would have been screened on the Croisette in normal times. This is to give them a media aura when they hit theaters.

Paul Verhoeven makes an appointment with Cannes 2021
He was a likely candidate for the Cannes Film Festival 2020: “Benedetta” by Paul Verhoeven was finally postponed by a year, producer Said Ben Said announced on Twitter. This biopic tells the story of sister Benedetta Carlini (played by Virginie Effira), who upset her community by performing miracles and who was poisoned because of her homosexuality.
