A lazy compromise in Salzwedel

The gardens between Hoyersburger and Feldstrasse are supposed to make room for house builders. Properties were advertised on the Internet.

Salzwedel l Thick air among the allotment gardeners on Feldstrasse. At the beginning of November, the first four of them received the notice of termination for their parcel. Not from the owner, but from his lawyer (the letter is available to Volksstimme). “He didn’t even speak to us,” complains Karl-Heinz Zimmermann, who has been cultivating his garden there since 1979. Now the others also fear that they will have to clear their gardens. And that’s what it currently looks like.

Background: At the beginning of March, Kurt Dann turned to the Volksstimme. He had heard of plans to build houses where he and his garden neighbors had plowed the land for decades. In an interview with the Volksstimme, he made it clear how important their parcels are to everyone.

From then on the discussion took off politically. In May, the SPD applied for the southern part of the gardens to be removed from the development plan. Mayor Sabine Blümel promoted said proposal in June: “Whoever wants to keep his garden can keep it, whoever wants to build can build it, and whoever wants to lease can lease.” At the time, there was talk of a good compromise solution.

Solution a few meters further

But back to the present. Because there is nothing more to be heard of a good compromise, rather of a lazy one. “The SPD’s application is not worth the paper on which it was written,” says Marco Heide (Die Linke) in an interview with the allotment gardener: “The will for a solution is missing.” This is from the point of view of Heide and Martin Schulz (The Greens) only a few meters away, on the other side of Hoyersburger Strasse. Because there were once gardens there too, says Kurt Dann. But the allotment gardeners all had to go out. The area has always made a name for itself as a wasteland. “You should check whether you can offer potential home builders a piece of land there. The SPD has already submitted an application for this, Heide said.

The allotment gardeners are particularly annoyed that their landlord has always assured them that they do not have to worry. “As long as he lives, nothing will happen here,” he is said to have assured everyone several times, says Dagmar von Kampen. The 64-year-old, like the others, is upset about the deception. “It’s not human,” Kurt Dann sums up his displeasure. The gardeners can tell that the situation is tense and helpless. “I hope you can help us,” Dagmar von Kampen asks city councilors and the press.

Letter of termination

Back to the letter of termination for the parcel 41/1 in question. The letter also states that the Salzwedel residents have to vacate their gardens by November 30, 2021. “An extension of the lease is contradicted.” Rather, gazebos, fences and paths are to be dismantled.

“I’m too old to tear everything down – not even a fence. I’ll do a devil! ”Whispers Dagmar von Kampen. The others agree: Nobody is willing to razed his work, which was built over decades, where his own children and grandchildren play.

Silke and Heiko Jacobs, who have not yet been given notice, fear that they will be the next. “I’ve already seen our properties on the Internet,” says Heiko Jacobs. Without exception, all gardeners want to keep their plot. Jacobs also doesn’t know anyone who wants to build there.

Now the ball is in the town hall and with the city councils. “It is still possible to save the gardens and have them built elsewhere,” says Marco Heide. The members of the building committee will already meet on Monday (23 November) at 6 p.m. in the Salzwedeler Kulturhaus. The allotment gardeners want to show their presence there and point out their precarious situation.
